Westlake Reed Leskosky master planned and is the designer for a new Inpatient Bed Tower. The new 126 bed hospital is connected to a recently completed family health and surgery center in Avon, Ohio a suburb west of Cleveland. The project consists of medical/surgical patient rooms and 12 ICU beds, emergency department expansion, imaging expansion, pharmacy, lab, dietary services and two new operating rooms.

Envisioned as the "Hospital of the Future," this project is the first new build inpatient tower on a green field site and the first in a new generation for the Cleveland Clinic. WRL has participated in the development of the goals and objectives for the project including: flexibility and expansion; leveraging technology; addressing the interdisciplinary team approach to both medicine and services; and utilization of regional and system wide resources, all with a focus on "Patients First."

Through a research project in collaboration with Nick Watkins, PhD, the project team developed patient room mockups that included multiple options. Through analysis of the input gathered during this process, a same-handed single patient room approach was selected. At the same time, specific lighting and acoustical approaches were considered and will be implemented in the final design. This Medical/Surgical room design will encompass the majority of the rooms. To accommodate the intensive care requirements, an acuity adaptable room was developed within the module of the M/S room. These rooms can flex in use for either intensive or acute care. Simultaneous to design, medical staff developed work flow processes based on interdisciplinary teaming, e-hospital and technological advancements, some of which are being created for this project.

The balance of the building is comprised of Patient Support Services, General Support Services and the diagnostic and interventional programs required to support this initial phase. The site and building are master planned to double the number of beds as a second phase project.
