GSA'S WAYNE N. ASPINALL FEDERAL BUILDING AND U.S. COURTHOUSE RECEIVES 2015 AIA/DC PRESIDENTIAL CITATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
WASHINGTON, DC (24 November 2015) – The Wayne N. Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Grand Junction, Colorado has received a 2015 AIA/DC Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the $15M modernization and high performing green building renovation not only preserved an anchor in the Grand Junction community, but also converted the 1918 landmark into one of the most energy efficient and sustainable historic buildings in the country. The design aims to be GSA's first Site Net-Zero Energy facility on the National Register and achieved LEED® Platinum certification.
The project was completed for GSA Rocky Mountain Region by Westlake Reed Leskosky and The Beck Group who were awarded the project in a Design-Build contract. Westlake Reed Leskosky served as Design Architect and Building Engineers of Record, providing architecture, integrated engineering, sustainable design, technology design and historic preservation services. The Beck Group served as Design-Builder and Architect of Record.
Exemplifying sustainable preservation, the project restores and showcases historic volumes and finishes, while sensitively incorporating innovative systems and drastically reducing energy consumption. The Design-Build approach acknowledged the federal government's goal to be carbon-neutral by 2030, and creates a "green proving ground" demonstrating how to potentially make an existing historic building perform at net-zero energy, 15 years ahead of schedule. Among over 14 awards, the project received a 2014 AIA COTE Top Ten award for sustainable design excellence and a 2014 GSA Design Award of Excellence for achievement in architecture, engineering, interior design and preservation.
The Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC) Awards Program "recognizes excellence in the categories of architecture, interior architecture, historic resources and urban design/master planning. The program not only demonstrates the value of good design, but also illustrates the wide variety of services performed by architects." (www.aiadc.com). The honor of the Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design considers the sustainable strategies integrated into the project as well as performance metrics.
